Even as the COVID-19 pandemic begins to wane in North America, the global supply chain is still reeling from the disruptive effects of the outbreak. Since the pandemic’s onset, Chicago-based FourKites has been enabling organizations to visualize and optimize their supply chain data, ensuring efficient and effective end-to-end supply chain operations. Founded in 2014 by CEO Matt Elenjickal, FourKites provides the largest global supply chain platform in the world, keeping goods moving across road, rail, ocean, and air for companies as large as Coca-Cola and Walmart.


The FourKites platform gives clients real-time visibility into all aspects of their supply chain, from the warehouse to the destination and every stop in between. The platform unites suppliers with third-party logistics firms in over 70 countries, enabling its customers to lower operating costs, improve on-time performance, and strengthen end-customer relationships. CEO Elenjickal defines and implements the company’s vision and strategy, working closely with the executive team to make the most of FourKites’ exemplary market research.


Recently, FourKites partnered with the Consumer Brands Association to create a new Supply Chain Health and Performance Task Force, an effort aimed at easing supply chain pressures across the consumer packaged goods industry. FourKites is the largest supply chain network of shippers and carriers, tracking over 2 million shipments daily across more than 600 customers, 600,000 carriers and 175+ countries globally — across road, rail, ocean and air, and more than 6 million connected facilities, including warehouses, ports, rail terminals, factories, distribution centers and stores. That unparalleled data network is what allows FourKites’ Dynamic ETA® technology to provide the industry’s most accurate estimated arrival times. Even when location data is not available, FourKites’ recently-patented Smart Forecasted Arrival (SFA) technology is capable of providing companies with frequent, accurate ETAs for freight in transit, intelligently calculated from the unrivalled breadth of FourKites’ network, which tracks 70 billion miles across 275,000 distinct stops, and churns out 1 billion ETAs each year. 


FourKites is also the only provider in the space that offers truly end-to-end, multimodal, predictive visibility. End-to-end with FourKites extends beyond simple load tracking, as other providers define it, and includes yard visibility, warehouse appointment management, shipping document collaboration tools, and visibility outside of your own shipments into those of your supply chain partners. Multimodal with FourKites means every mode of transportation across every geo is consistently covered, while other providers fall short in their air, rail and drayage capabilities (even intermodal exchanges). And predictive with FourKites means true multi-stop ETAs along the entire freight journey so shippers can plan ahead, rather than just seeing checkpoints after your load has already arrived. FourKites has redefined these terms, and that paired with their history of customer-led innovation continue to move supply chain visibility into the future.


And with the largest and most engaged customer base in the industry — including 18 of the top-20 food and beverage companies and nine of the top-10 CPG companies, and spanning 50% of the Fortune 500 — FourKites has a proven track record of actively collaborating with customers on product development. In the last 12 months alone, FourKites delivered 126 new features generated by ideas from its community, including new platform capabilities developed in close collaboration with customers such as Meijer, Land O’Lakes, Coca-Cola, Kimberly-Clark, Walmart Canada, and Eastman.

Social/Environmental Mission


FourKites is committed to sustainable practices, and serves as a single source of truth for data and collaborative tools to promote sustainability across the entire ecosystem. In 2020, FourKites developed a free Sustainability Dashboard, giving customers visibility into the environmental impact of their supply chains to reduce waste, reduce dwell time and eliminate empty miles. Meanwhile, its Sustainability Center of Excellence serves as a thought leadership council for ongoing sustainability innovation. 


FourKites is also committed to raising awareness of sustainability initiatives throughout the logistics community. In its quarterly Premier Carrier List (PCL), which recognizes the hundreds of brokers, carriers and 3PLs worldwide who are achieving the highest standards of visibility-related operational excellence across all modes of transport, FourKites allows users to filter the list to find organizations that are registered as partners in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay® program. SmartWay helps companies advance supply chain sustainability by measuring, benchmarking and improving freight transportation efficiencies. 


Diversity and Inclusion


FourKites prioritizes diversity, equity and inclusion by celebrating employee differences, increasing empathy, creating educational opportunities and becoming more diverse as the company grows. 


Employees are encouraged to lead DEI efforts both inside the company and as a team supporting their communities. FourKites’ Global Employee DEI Council represents different levels, locations and backgrounds, and provides input, ideas, creative energy and assistance for developing an organizational culture that embraces and celebrates diversity. FourKites DEI strategy includes action plans for education, community involvement, affinity groups and recruiting to ensure that as the company grows, it becomes more diverse and welcoming for all employees. Examples of DEI education sessions in 2021 include Global Cultural Sensitivity Training and multiple DEI-related book clubs honoring racial and gender diversity. Today, four of the company’s 14 business leaders are women. In addition, 30% of the company’s 600-person staff are women, and more than 50% of its staff are non-white.


Community Involvement


FourKites remains committed to setting a positive example in Chicago’s tech scene and uses its resources to strengthen its surrounding communities. The company is involved with the Chicago Technical Academy, a STEM school on the near southwest side that provides project-based tech learning to underserved black communities in Chicago; participates in Tutoring Chicago and Chi-Tech Academy’s mentoring program; and regularly volunteers at the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Additionally, FourKites has a formal partnership with Truckers Against Trafficking to help combat human trafficking.
