Profile
Mapbox, a provider of custom online maps, has grown the business from a bootstrapped start-up in Washington, DC, to a robust team of 500+ with offices across the world. Its products are used by tech giants including Adobe, IBM, and Snapchat.
Since 2010, Mapbox has rapidly expanded the niche of custom maps, as a response to the limited choice offered by map providers such as Google Maps. Mapbox does not have an app, but it has over 700 million monthly active users. Mapbox provides a global map, real-time traffic, location search, and navigation via its APIs and SDKs. In addition, its open-source tools help analytics companies understand big geo data, drone companies publish flyovers, real estate sites visualize properties, satellite companies process cloud-free imagery, and insurance companies track assets.
Looking forward, the company is trying to establish itself as the center of car navigation systems. Last year Mapbox inked a deal with BMW Group for in-car navigation. This year the company is looking to unveil deals with a half-dozen additional carmakers. Mapbox has raised a total $226 million to date, and was valued at $1.2 billion as of April 2020.

Mapbox Boundaries
This expertly-curated set of 4 million global boundaries helps users analyze geospatial data. Detailed data layers including administrative, legislative, locality, postal, and statistical appear as georeferenced and processed Mapbox vector tiles. Polygons are crystal-clear with full detail at all levels of zoom, and receive consistent data updates to stay current with market accuracy. Analysis filters such as customized sales territory planning, supply chain optimization, and real estate portfolio management are just a few examples of Boundaries’ flexible geospatial business intelligence solutions.
Mapbox Traffic Data
A dataset that can be added onto any map system, Traffic Data allows users to design a custom routing engine or traffic analysis solutions with real-time accuracy for live and typical street activity. The data is aggregated from a globally-distributed user base of over 600 million monthly active users, and it’s frequently benchmarked and validated for optimal precision. This dataset can provision pinpointed ETAs to drive efficiency and clarity for logistics and delivery dispatch staff. The encyclopedic data helps users comprehend historical and real-time vehicle movement for geospatial insights and general road research.
Mapbox Movement
The Mapbox Movement dataset dives into the finer details of transportation metrics. It has earned its reputation as the most all-encompassing, privacy-forward dataset of population movement on the market. The data is derived from around 20 billion daily location updates, which provide transparency for aggregate movement, activity, and population density over time at a country, city, or regional scale. This tool has recently been employed for a variety of COVID-19 response frontline workers and assessors, in addition to its consistent use in retail expansion, advertising, demand modeling, impact analysis, and transportation planning.
