Profile

Allison Pickens is one of the world’s top experts on how to grow recurring revenue. She is a thought leader on the business transformation that accompanies the shift to the cloud, having coached thousands of CEOs and executives at both SaaS startups and Fortune 500 companies. She has experience as an independent board director, COO, P&L owner, and investor.

As the former COO at Gainsight, the top customer success software company, Allison was #2 to the CEO in scaling the company from infancy to a multi-product platform today, and in creating the category of customer success software. Along the way, Allison and her team developed industry-recognized best practices on how the shift to subscription business models has precipitated a new focus on customer centricity and necessitated significant changes in go-to-market strategy and company organization. Allison was named one of the Top Women in SaaS and Top 50 People in Sales and Business Development. She is part of the Fortune Most Powerful Women community, which recognized the ideas she has shared in hundreds of conferences, blog posts, and podcasts, including The Customer Success Podcast that she hosted (40+ episodes recorded, with 130,000 listens). She co-authored a book called The Customer Success Economy, which will become available this spring through the publisher Wiley. Allison has served as an independent Board Director for two privately held SaaS companies (RainforestQA and eCompliance), is an advisor to a top 3 management consulting firm regarding their clients’ digital transformations, and was an Executive-in-Residence at Bessemer Venture Partners, where she has advised dozens of portfolio company CEOs.

Allison started her career in management consulting for Fortune 500 companies while at BCG and later worked in private equity investing at Bain Capital. Allison has degrees from Yale University and Stanford University.

  1. Allison is responsible for implementing the notion of Servant Leadership at Gainsight. She believes in the importance of setting a great example for Gainsight employees to aspire to. For Allison, being a leader allows her to work to serve employees at the company, rather than the other way around. Gainsight employees have been receptive to the idea of Servant Leadership and are appreciative of Allison’s candor and her willingness to accept her own imperfections. Allison constantly works to address all feedback she receives and incorporates it into her own growth. By thinking outside the box and focusing on what Gainsight’s customers really want, Allison has helped Gainsight grow exponentially in a competitive market. Most importantly, Allison’s presence in the technology space is paving the way for future female leaders.

  2. Allison is incredibly adaptive, reasoned, and curious. She’s highly insightful and is always looking to understand the underlying causes of efficiency or inefficiency in her role as COO. She’s shown she’s not afraid to adapt when she’s been wrong and take purposeful steps to grow as a leader. Allison is obviously brilliant and a methodical thinker. Her business results speak for themselves, but it’s her ability to be self-aware and self-critical that stands out to me. In a world of prideful executives, that kind of commitment to self-improvement is a rare virtue.

It’s often one over the other. – instrumental in scaling our business from series A to series E – a key lever in all things fundraising, growth, M&A – a woman who empowers other women – also a rare breed
