Industry-Specific Software Provider Epicor Names New CEO

A year after its acquisition by private equity firm KKR, Austin, TX-based Epicor Software has announced the appointment of Stephen Murphy, the former president of OpenText, as its new CEO. Murphy will replace Joe Cowan, who led the firm for four transformational years as its president and CEO.

Most recently, Stephen held the title as president of enterprise information management company OpenText, a $2 billion firm with 12,000 employees. With Murphy at the helm, Waterloo, Canada-based OpenText executed the integration of four major acquisitions.

Prior to OpenText, Murphy spent about two decades in the technology sector with leadership roles in sales and operations at software companies such as Oracle, Sun Microsystems and Manugistics. He also has manufacturing and distribution experience leading global logistics and supply chain strategy and major enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementations with Accenture and Procter & Gamble.

Stephen received an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Davis.

“As we look toward to the next phase of growth for the company, we are pleased to have Stephen join the Epicor team. He brings a strong customer-centric orientation, a growth mindset and a proven track record of leadership,” said Herald Chen, the Head of the Technology Investment Team at KKR.

"I am extremely excited to join the Epicor team and have the opportunity to lead this incredible company. Epicor is poised for greatness—with a strong global team of more than 3,700 employees all focused on the customer experience and delivering innovative products, services and support that enable businesses to grow with ease. Together, we have an amazing opportunity ahead to build on our customer-centric culture of growth and take the company to the next level of success,” said Murphy.
