Matt Garman to Lead Amazon Web Services as New CEO

Amazon.com Inc. has announced a leadership change in its cloud-computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS). Effective June 3, 2024, Matt Garman will take over as CEO of AWS, succeeding Adam Selipsky. The announcement was made on May 14, 2024, with Amazon's CEO Andy Jassy praising Garman’s extensive experience and skills.

Garman, who currently heads sales and marketing for AWS, has been with Amazon since 2005. Initially joining as an intern during his MBA program, he became a full-time employee in 2006 and was one of the initial product managers for AWS. Jassy highlighted "Matt has an unusually strong set of skills and experiences for his new role. He's very customer focused, a terrific product leader, inventive, a clever problem-solver, right a lot, has high standards and meaningful bias for action, and in the 18 years he's been in AWS, he's been one of the better learners I've encountered."

AWS, a leader in the cloud computing industry, has been instrumental in Amazon's growth. The division provides a wide range of cloud services, including computing power, storage options, and networking capabilities. Under Selipsky's leadership, AWS achieved significant milestones, including reaching a $100 billion annual revenue run rate in the last quarter. Selipsky is credited with driving a sequential acceleration in revenue growth, leaving AWS in a robust position as he transitions to new challenges.

Jassy expressed confidence in Garman's ability to continue the momentum at AWS. "I'm excited to see Matt and his outstanding AWS leadership team continue to invent our future—it's still such early days in AWS," Jassy remarked. Despite the leadership transition, Amazon shares experienced a slight decline, down about 1% in morning trading on the day of the announcement.

Garman’s appointment marks a significant shift for AWS as it continues to navigate the competitive landscape of cloud computing. With a proven track record and a deep understanding of AWS's operations and market, Garman is poised to lead the division into its next phase of growth and innovation.
