Paychex’s Martin Mucci to Retire as CEO, Stay on as Chairman

After a 20-year tenure in leadership roles at Paychex, Chief Executive Officer Martin Mucci is retiring from the top job, but will remain as Chairman of the Board, the company has announced. Mucci is winding down a 40-year career in technology-related businesses; prior to joining Paychex in 2002, he spent two decades with Frontier Communications, for which he ultimately served as President.

Paychex is a leading provider of integrated human capital management software solutions for human resources, payroll, benefits, and insurance services which Mucci has led since 2010, both as CEO and President. The retiring CEO will pass both roles to Chief Operations Officer John B. Gibson, Jr. effective October 14th, 2022.

In his time as CEO, Mucci led Paychex as it transformed into a technology-enabled company, significantly expanding it into a provider of software-as-a-service (SaaS) products and personalized managed services. The company serves more than 730,000 small and mid-sized businesses, boasting over $4 billion in annual revenue and a market cap of over $40 billion.
