Splunk Lands Proofpoint Leader Gary Steele As New CEO

Splunk, a San Francisco-based data analysis software company, has named Gary Steele as its new permanent Chief Executive Officer, the company announced in early March.

Formerly the founding CEO of Proofpoint, Steele has nearly 40 years of experience in software. Splunk has sought to reframe itself as a cloud-first solution provider, moving away from on-premises software services.

After reporting strong Q4 and fiscal year 2022 results, Steele is stepping in at an opportune time for Splunk’s market positioning and overall future. Splunk reported fourth quarter revenue of more than $900 million, as well as a total annual recurring revenue of $3.12 billion — up 32% year-over-year. As CEO of Proofpoint, Steele oversaw record growth over a period of more than 17 years. He also led the company through its 2012 IPO and its 2021 acquisition by Thoma Bravo.
