Workday Hires Sequoia Capital and VMware Veteran Carl Eschenbach as Co-CEO

Workday, the enterprise management software company, has named Carl Eschenbach as its new co-chief executive officer, joining Aneel Bhusri, the company’s current CEO, co-founder, and chair, through January 2024. The new co-CEO will subsequently remain on the Workday board of directors, which he has been a member of since 2018. When his co-CEO term is complete, Eschenbach is expected to take over sole responsibilities, freeing Bhusri to take on a full-time role as executive chair and remain as chair of the board.

Eschenbach has been a partner at Sequoia Capital since 2016, but previously, he served as president and chief operating officer at VMware for more than a decade — invaluable experience to bring to his new role. The executive is also busy as a board member for several other organizations, contributing to an array of tech companies such as Palo Alto Networks, UiPath, and Snowflake, as well as startups such as Cohesity and Kumo.ai. Overall, he boasts over 35 years of experience with successful tech ventures, setting him up for even more success growing Workday’s cloud-based enterprise applications for finance and human resources.
